Activities to Include in Your Michigan Winter Elopement

Winter is probably the least popular time to get married in Michigan. Actually… spring might be, because if you’ve experienced a Michigan spring, you know we don’t really have one. We just call it mud season, anyway haha But winter? Winter is wildly underrated. Lets chat about some activities to include in your Michigan winter elopement.

It’s quiet, like hear a pin drop quiet. Peaceful. Snowy in the dreamiest way. The woods feel still, the lakes freeze over with the coolest ice formations, and you can go hours without seeing another person, well mostly. If you’re the kind of couple who wants your day to feel less “peopley” and cozy and a little adventurous… winter might secretly be perfect for you.

This is exactly how I picture a winter elopement –
Warming up by the fireplace in your cabin.
Walking hand-in-hand through snow-covered trees.
Steam rising off the water along the shoreline.
Ice stacked along the lake like crystals.

It just feels different.

If you’re leaning toward a winter elopement, here are some fun activities you can build into your day (or weekend!) to make it feel like a full experience.

Fun Winter Elopement Activities

bride and groom standing on a mountain with trees, blue sky and snow in the background

ICE FISHING

VISIT AN ICE CAVE

My favorites are Eben Ice Caves + The Ice Curtains in Munising

ICE SKATING (INDOORS OR OUTSIDE)

VISIT A LOCAL BREWERY

Blackrocks Brewery, Ore Dock Brewing, and Keweenaw Brewing Company are all great!

RENT A CABIN OR AIRBNB WITH A FIREPLACE

Pinecrest Northwoods, Pinewood Lodge, and Fresh Coast Cabins are all ones I reccomend!

SLEDDING

RENT A SNOWMOBILE

A great place to rent from! Munising Michigan Snowmobile Rentals

STARGAZING

Check out a dark sky park BUT anywhere in the UP will be great!

NORTHERN LIGHTS CHASING

BONFIRE

SNOWSHOEING OR CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING

DOWNHILL SKIING OR SNOWBOARDING

Check out MQT Mountain or Mount Bohemia

I really believe Michigan is a place you should experience in every season. Each one feels completely different.

And winter? It’s for the couples who don’t mind the cold, want virtually no crowds, and care more about the experience than doing what everyone else is doing. If that sounds like you… winter might just be your season.

Honestly, there’s nothing better than eloping in the snow and then warming up by a fire together after. It just feels right.
