Make your elopement day extra memorable by including some fun winter activities:
Tip: Don’t forget to include some indoor activities or locations as part of your day to warm up and relax.
Having a backup plan is essential when planning a winter elopement in Michigan.
I always suggest having two ceremony locations in mind, the primary and a backup location in case we are unable to get to the first one. Michigan can be unpredictable year round, but winter in Michigan, it is even more true. A spot isn’t plowed, no parking, or too much ice, all things to think about and make sure we are prepared.
Weather: While a white winter wedding is dreamy, just keep in mind that snow isn’t always guaranteed. Some years, we have snow on the ground for six months, and other years our winters are extremely mild. A white wedding is the goal, but just know that it can not always be the case. Be prepared to adapt to what nature provides.
Even though times can be unpredictable, just remember to go with the flow and have fun!
The important part, how do I make my elopement legal?
Both parties must be 18 years plus, and it is not required to be a Michigan resident.
Michigan Residents: If you or your partner are Michigan residents, you must apply for your marriage license in the county where at least one of you resides. However, once issued, the license is valid anywhere in Michigan.
Out-of-State Couples: If neither of you are Michigan residents, you’ll need to apply in the county where your ceremony will take place.
Just make sure to bring valid identification, such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport, to apply.
Michigan requires you to have two-witnesses and an officiant sign your marriage license. I am ordained and will gladly sign your marriage license. Most of my couples opt to not have a traditional ceremony and will instead read vows to each other. If you choose to not have any guests present, we can ask a couple people out and about to sign the marriage license, and they always love it!
The signed license must be returned to the same county clerk’s office that issued it. You can usually return it by mail or drop it off in person. The county will then process and officially register your marriage.
Here are must-haves to stay warm and comfortable:
Planning a winter elopement in Michigan can be an unforgettable experience. With the right preparation and a touch of adventure, your special day will be just as unique.
