Where to Elope for Your Michigan Winter Elopement

Marquette, MI

  • Sugarloaf Mountain – This is a great hike year-round. If you are adventurous and want to include a hike on your day, this is the location for you.
  • Presque Isle Park – Presque Isle Park is home to the famous “Black Rocks.” This is still accessible in the winter month, just entails a short walk.
  • Wetmore Landing – Which is located right on Lake Superior, this location offers tall trees, a beach, and rocky shoreline. A great spot in the winter, but does include a small hike.

Manistique, MI

  • Big Springs (Kitch-iti-kipi) – Big Springs is spectacular in the winter months with the bluish/green water and pine trees as a backdrop. The parking lot is not always plowed, so we just have to park near the road and walk in.
  • Fayette State Park – An old historic town nestled in a bay of Lake Michigan. This is a unique location with a combo of old buildings and right on the water.

Copper Harbor, MI

  • Brockway Mountain – this is an adventure in the winter months because it is only accessible by snowmobile!

Grand Marais, MI

  • Sable Falls – A beautiful waterfall to visit year round. A short hike that mostly consists of stairs.

Depending on the location that is selected, we will look and see if a permit is required to get married there.

Dress for the Weather

Layers are your best friend! Winter in Michigan can be unpredictable, so it’s important to dress warmly while staying stylish. Think cozy and functional:

  • Wear thermal under-layers – top and bottom.
  • Opt for a fur jacket or a cute, weather-appropriate coat for photos. This gives you a variety in your shots too. You can take some without the jacket, and some with, either way, it is super cute.
  • Don’t forget ice cleats or Yaktrax to keep your footing secure on snowy or icy paths. A must for a Michigan Winter Elopement. I will add this to your packing list too so you don’t forget!

Backup Plan for Your Michigan Winter Elopement

Having a backup plan is essential when planning a winter elopement in Michigan.

I always suggest having two ceremony locations in mind, the primary and a backup location in case we are unable to get to the first one. Michigan can be unpredictable year round, but winter in Michigan, it is even more true. A spot isn’t plowed, no parking, or too much ice, all things to think about and make sure we are prepared.

Weather: While a white winter wedding is dreamy, just keep in mind that snow isn’t always guaranteed. Some years, we have snow on the ground for six months, and other years our winters are extremely mild. A white wedding is the goal, but just know that it can not always be the case. Be prepared to adapt to what nature provides.

Even though times can be unpredictable, just remember to go with the flow and have fun!

How to Make Your Michigan Winter Elopement Legal

The important part, how do I make my elopement legal?

Both parties must be 18 years plus, and it is not required to be a Michigan resident.

Michigan Residents: If you or your partner are Michigan residents, you must apply for your marriage license in the county where at least one of you resides. However, once issued, the license is valid anywhere in Michigan.

Out-of-State Couples: If neither of you are Michigan residents, you’ll need to apply in the county where your ceremony will take place.

Just make sure to bring valid identification, such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport, to apply.

Michigan requires you to have two-witnesses and an officiant sign your marriage license. I am ordained and will gladly sign your marriage license. Most of my couples opt to not have a traditional ceremony and will instead read vows to each other. If you choose to not have any guests present, we can ask a couple people out and about to sign the marriage license, and they always love it!

The signed license must be returned to the same county clerk’s office that issued it. You can usually return it by mail or drop it off in person. The county will then process and officially register your marriage.
