Fall in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.) is amazing, and if you haven’t experienced it, you’re missing out on one of the best fall foliage in the world. The vivid reds, oranges, and yellows that blanket the landscape are breathtaking, making autumn one of the best times to plan your elopement. But if you’re considering a fall elopement here, there are a few things you need to know.
One thing about fall in the U.P.—it never looks the same twice. The timing and intensity of fall foliage change year to year, depending on weather patterns. While I typically suggest aiming for the first two weeks of October for peak colors, it’s not always guaranteed. Some years, the vibrant hues arrive early, while other years, they stick around a little later. That’s why working with a local expert is a critical part of the process. A photographer, like me, who is familiar with the area can guide you to the best spots at the right time to ensure you get those postcard-worthy backdrops for your elopement.
September is the month if you want cooler weather, but still nice warm days. In the month of September, there are less tourists around. Things are winding down from summer, but activities are still open.
October is the month to elope if you want fall colors. If your main goal is fall foliage, October is the month to plan your UP elopement.
The location within the U.P. plays a significant role in when you’ll see peak fall colors. The west side of the U.P., especially around the Porcupine Mountains, tends to see the leaves change earlier than the east side. If you’re eloping near the shores of Lake Michigan or Lake Superior, expect the foliage to peak about a week later than areas farther inland. The microclimates created by the Great Lakes have a huge influence on when and where you’ll find the most vibrant colors, so it’s important to pick your location wisely if you’re set on capturing those fall hues.
A few areas that are great to elope in Michigan are:
Porcupine Mountains
Marquette, Michigan
Copper Harbor
Keweenaw Peninsula
Fall in the U.P. can be unpredictable. You might get crisp, sunny days perfect for hiking or exploring waterfalls, but it’s also not unusual to experience chilly winds or lots of rain. In fact, it is not unusual to have a snowfall in the month of October. Be prepared for a range of weather conditions and pack accordingly—layers are your best friend. If you’re adventuring outdoors for your elopement, make sure you have a plan for staying comfortable, whether that means packing cozy blankets or planning to stay at your cabin a little longer.
Here are some activities to include in your fall elopement!
-Bonfire
-Visit a Pumpkin Patch
-Rent a side by side
-Take a scenic drive
-Stargazing
-Hunt for Northern Lights
-Hunt for Yooper Lights
-Explore Waterfalls
-Relax in your cozy cabin
Despite the unpredictability, fall truly is one of the best seasons for eloping in the Upper Peninsula. The vibrant colors, cool temperatures, and fewer tourists make it an ideal time for intimate, adventurous weddings. The landscape becomes a photographer’s dream, and the crisp air adds a sense of coziness and romance. Fall in the UP sets the stage for a day you’ll never forget.
As we talked about above, fall has unpredictable weather, so that can make packing a touch stressful, but no need to stress, I am here to help!
